Shai Gilgeous Alexander MVP is the lead result after the NBA announced that the Oklahoma City Thunder star won the league MVP award for a second consecutive season.

The NBA said in a statement Friday that the 27 year old guard from Hamilton, Ontario earned the honor after a breakout 2025 to 2026 season. He averaged 31.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, a career high 6.6 assists, and 1.4 steals, while shooting 55.3 percent from the field, according to NBA statistics.

Shai Gilgeous Alexander MVP repeat caps another historic year

According to the league, Gilgeous Alexander became the 14th player in NBA history to win back to back MVP awards and, along with Steve Nash, is one of two Canadian winners to take multiple MVP trophies. The NBA also noted that last season, after his first MVP, he helped lead Oklahoma City to the franchise’s first NBA championship, the team said in a release.

NBA records show Gilgeous Alexander broke Wilt Chamberlain’s consecutive 20 point game streak, reaching 140 games, a mark the league highlighted when announcing the award.

    Regular season dominance and leadership

Gilgeous Alexander’s leadership translated into team results. The Thunder finished the regular season with 64 wins and 18 losses, the NBA reported, marking a second straight 60 win campaign for the franchise.

Despite injuries at times during the year, Oklahoma City secured the top seed in the Western Conference, the team said. The league also named him this month as the NBA Clutch Player of the Year for his play in late game situations.

Playoff run and path to another title defense

Gilgeous Alexander carried his regular season form into the playoffs. According to NBA box scores, he averaged 29.1 points per game in the postseason while the Thunder swept the Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Lakers in successive rounds.

With the latest MVP trophy, officially known as the Michael Jordan Trophy, added to his case, Gilgeous Alexander will lead Oklahoma City into the Western Conference Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, the NBA schedule shows. The Thunder aim to continue their title defense in that series.

What the team and league said

In a statement, Thunder general manager Sam Presti said the organization was proud of Gilgeous Alexander’s work on and off the court. “He has lifted this team with his consistency and leadership,” Presti said.

The NBA added that voting for the MVP was based on ballots from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters, and the league published the vote totals with its announcement.

Shai Gilgeous Alexander MVP will be the central storyline as the Thunder pursue another championship in the coming weeks, the team and league officials said.
