PrismML iPhone AI is reportedly under evaluation by Apple, The Information reported, as the company explores model-compression tools to run large language models directly on iPhone hardware.

The Information reported that Apple has opened talks with AI startup PrismML to assess the startup’s compression techniques, which aim to shrink models that normally require cloud servers so they can run on devices such as the iPhone.
PrismML, via its website and public statements, said it optimized Alibaba’s open source language model Qwen 3.6 to run on the iPhone 17 Pro. The company said the optimized model contains about 27 billion parameters and that it plans to publish the model as open source on July 14.

Apple’s interest in PrismML centers on reducing the company’s reliance on cloud servers for complex inference, a move that could improve response times, lower operating costs, and keep more user data on the device for privacy reasons.
How PrismML iPhone AI could change on-device processing
Running large models on smartphones means data no longer needs to be uploaded to remote servers to complete tasks such as document summarization, translation, and conversational agents.
That advantage is particularly relevant for privacy-conscious users in Hong Kong and other markets, where keeping inference on device reduces exposure to networked data transfers.
PrismML told visitors to its website that its techniques balance model size, latency, and compute demand so more capable models can perform locally on modern mobile chips.
Technical claims and what to watch for
PrismML says the optimized Qwen 3.6 build demonstrates software development capabilities when running on iPhone 17 Pro hardware, but independent benchmarks will be needed to verify latency and power consumption in real-world use.
The Information reported Apple is only at an exploratory stage with PrismML, and the two companies have not announced any partnership. PrismML’s July 14 open source release should reveal more about its compression methods and performance.
Market context and other reports
Separately, industry sources who spoke to TechNews Taiwan on condition of anonymity said some market chatter claims that Apple previously purchased an AI startup called Q.ai for about $2 billion. Those reports remain unconfirmed by Apple.
Apple has pursued on-device AI through both acquisitions and licensing before, and analysts say combining in-house hardware with compressed models could accelerate improvements to Apple Intelligence over time.
For now, Apple and PrismML appear to be in an assessment phase. Analysts and users will be watching PrismML’s open source release on July 14, and whether Apple elects to integrate the startup’s approaches into future iPhone releases.
Reporting for this story was based on The Information, PrismML’s public statements, and TechNews Taiwan, which first summarized market reports about the unconfirmed Q.ai transaction.
