Discord age verification will be mandatory for more than 200 million users worldwide in the second half of 2026, Discord said, with accounts that fail verification moved into a restricted teen experience.

AI replaces human checks for Discord age verification

Discord said its system will first use a machine learning model to infer age from existing account signals, including account history, gaming activity, and payment behavior. If the model assigns a high confidence that an account belongs to an adult, the platform will skip manual verification.
That means, Discord said, most users will not see a verification prompt because the system will complete the assessment behind the scenes. When the model cannot reach a confident decision, users will be asked to submit a selfie or identity document to confirm age.
Discord named identity partner k-ID as a processor that will receive verification outcomes only, and said it will not retain original photos or document files. The company also named document-check partner Veratad. Discord said identity documents will be deleted immediately after verification. As of June 23, 2026, there is no publicly available independent technical audit to confirm those claims.

Persona test in the UK led to partnership change
Discord previously ran a small test in the United Kingdom in January 2026 with identity vendor Persona. Persona’s privacy policy language about drawing on third party databases, government records, and public sources triggered strong user backlash.
After the reaction, Discord said it ended the Persona partnership and requested deletion of test data. Discord now plans to use k-ID as a primary partner and to test another vendor, Incode. The company said facial age estimation must run on the user device, rather than on company servers.

How Discord age verification will affect users
Discord said the policy will be rolled out globally, so users in Hong Kong and other markets will be covered. If the AI model cannot confirm an account holder is an adult, the user will be asked to provide a selfie or identity document to prove age.
For people who value anonymity online, the change raises concerns about handling of biometric data. Discord said facial analysis will take place on the device and that documents are deleted after verification, but the company has not published an independent audit of those processes.

In a public statement, Discord CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy acknowledged earlier mistakes in handling the tests and promised greater transparency and more verification options before the global rollout. The company has not announced a detailed timetable for the deployment.
