Tesla Robotaxi Launches Autonomous Ride-Hailing Service in Austin Texas

Tesla has officially launched its Robotaxi autonomous driving service in Austin, Texas, offering ride-hailing through a mobile app. An early access program is available to select users, allowing them to book rides in the dedicated Robotaxi section within the Tesla app. The current fleet consists of 10 to 20 Model Y autonomous vehicles, with a fixed fare of $4.20 per ride, approximately HKD 33.

Tesla's Robotaxi app features a sleek and simple interface, resembling traditional ride-hailing applications. Once users log in, they can easily select their destination and pickup location, with real-time updates on vehicle arrival times. The app also empowers users to set personal preferences like cabin temperature. On the login page, a prominent image of the Model Y Robotaxi showcases Tesla's signature minimalist aesthetic.

To help users quickly adapt to the autonomous driving service, the app offers a variety of practical tips, including instructions on how to operate the doors of the Model Y and the meanings of the vehicle's indicator lights. The system proactively recommends nearby options like cafes, restaurants, parks, and shopping centers, making trip planning even more convenient for users.

The entire app design is centered around the golden theme of Cybercab, highlighting Tesla's commitment to the future of its dedicated two-seater autonomous vehicle, Cybercab. Currently, the fare is set at $4.20 per ride and doesn’t accept extra tips. When users attempt to leave a tip, the app showcases the Tesla hedgehog mascot and jokingly comments Just Kidding. While there may be considerations for adding a tipping option in the future, the fixed fare model remains in place for now.

Tesla's Robotaxi service leverages Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology and stands out from competitors like Waymo, which relies on LiDAR sensors, by depending solely on cameras and artificial intelligence for navigation. The vehicles are clearly marked with distinctive signs for easy identification. Currently, this service is only available in the Austin area, and Tesla is also working on regulatory applications in places like California.
