Toyota Unveils the Tacoma H2-Overlander Hydrogen Off-Road Vehicle at SEMA

This year, Toyota unveiled a hydrogen fuel off-road vehicle concept named Tacoma H2-Overlander at the SEMA show in Las Vegas, USA. Developed by the Toyota Racing Development (TRD) team, the vehicle is centered around sustainable energy, integrating zero-emission technology into the off-road environment, showcasing the future potential of hydrogen fuel cells for outdoor applications.

The Tacoma H2-Overlander is built on the Toyota TNGA-F chassis platform and features a second-generation fuel cell stack equivalent to that of the Mirai, complemented by three high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks with a total capacity of 6 kilograms. Its overall powertrain consists of two electric motors: the front axles deliver 301 horsepower, while the rear axles contribute 252 horsepower, summing up to a total output of 547 horsepower. Equipped with a front limited-slip differential and a rear electronically locked differential, it ensures stable performance even on rugged terrain.

The power system is combined with a set of 24.9kWh lithium-ion battery packs, supporting continuous power supply during low-speed driving while enhancing energy conversion efficiency. The cooling system incorporates TRD Pro components and design elements from the Lexus RZ to meet heat dissipation needs during high-load operations.

The vehicle’s suspension system is specifically enhanced for off-road scenarios. The TRD team has opted for the Fox 2.5 Performance Elite Series long-travel shock absorbers sourced from the Tundra testing platform, while also installing a Tundra class front braking system to boost stopping power. The wheels feature 17-inch Method Race aluminum alloy rims paired with 35-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires, enhancing both capability and grip performance.

The Tacoma H2-Overlander features an innovative technology, the exhaust water filtration recovery system, which Toyota has announced is currently patent pending. Since the only byproduct of hydrogen fuel cell operation is water, this system can collect the moisture generated, filter it, and repurpose it for outdoor washing or quick showers. Toyota also cautions that while the water has been processed, it is not suitable for drinking.

Aside from its powertrain technology, the H2-Overlander is also equipped with outdoor power support capabilities, featuring a built-in power system that can deliver up to 15 kilowatts. It comes with dual NEMA 14-50 outlets, which can support everyday electricity needs at the campsite and even charge two electric vehicles simultaneously. This functionality caters to the practical demands of modern outdoor living.

When it comes to the rear design, this vehicle features a specially installed flip-up storage unit made from recycled carbon fiber panels. It cleverly hides essential outdoor gear like a fridge, BBQ grill, and foldable tables and chairs. Additionally, the rear is equipped with sand recovery boards and a rooftop tent, elevating its camping capabilities even further. Upfront, the pump has been upgraded to a heavy-duty version, complete with a built-in winch and tow hook to tackle any unexpected situations that may arise during off-roading.

When it comes to lighting, the vehicle is equipped with multiple auxiliary lights. It features a light strip hidden in the front bumper and seven round spotlights on the roof. The sides and rear also have lighting configurations, providing comprehensive illumination for the campsite and driving environment.

While the Tacoma H2-Overlander is currently still a concept car and Toyota has yet to announce plans for mass production, this vehicle serves as a reference model for the brand’s further expansion of hydrogen fuel cell technology into multi-purpose vehicles. Toyota is currently developing the next generation of its FCEV system, which is expected to improve energy efficiency by 20%. The first applications will be in the future Corolla lineup, which is expected to launch versions powered by internal combustion, hybrid, pure electric, and hydrogen fuel.

Through this exhibition, Toyota showcases its diverse approach to future hydrogen power technologies, spanning from passenger cars and large commercial vehicles to off-road applications. The Tacoma H2-Overlander perfectly embodies the potential feasibility of hydrogen energy technology in outdoor scenarios.
