Mercedes-Benz Third-Generation CLA Hybrid with 800V Platform and 792km Range

The third-generation CLA introduces a hybrid approach combining both oil and electric power, leading the way with the launch of the electrified version known as C174. Yes, the electrified CLA won’t carry an EQ label; it will simply be called CLA (its official name is CLA with EQ Technology), just like the new generations of electrified GLB and GLC, using the most straightforward name.

The CLA, just like its two predecessors, features a sleek and low-profile design aimed at one goal: reducing aerodynamic drag. This latest version boasts a drag coefficient of just Cd 0.21, a slight improvement from the previous 0.22. Don’t underestimate that 0.01 reduction; aerodynamic resistance is a key culprit behind increased fuel and energy consumption. Even a decrease of just 0.01 can enhance the range by up to 25%. If you drive around 15,000 kilometers a year, that’s an additional 375 kilometers you could potentially gain. So, the lower the drag, the more efficient it is in saving energy and fuel.

To achieve a better aerodynamic low-resistance design, the latest model features a slightly lower front compared to its predecessor, with the addition of airflow devices on the wheels that effectively direct air around the sides. It also incorporates must-have features for modern electric vehicles, such as continuous LED daytime running lights. In response, the brand adds its signature illuminated star emblem at the front and rear, along with glowing indicators and light accents, increasing visibility during nighttime driving. With the engine now absent from beneath the hood, this marks the first time the brand has included a front trunk (frunk) in the design, boasting 101 liters of space—perfect not just for charging cables, but also as an ideal spot for snacks on the go.

The current generation CLA is Mercedes-Benz’s first electric vehicle to utilize the 800V electrical platform, a system that has been adopted subsequently by models like the GLB and GLC. This new platform offers the advantage of rapid charging, allowing for a 320km range boost in just 10 minutes—nearly the same time it takes to refuel a traditional gas vehicle. Besides the 800V platform, the CLA is equipped with an 85kWh battery, providing an impressive maximum range of 792km. The tested model, the 250, features a rear-mounted single motor (meaning it’s rear-wheel drive), delivering a power output of 272 horsepower and 335Nm of torque. Driving it feels akin to a traditional gasoline car, with acceleration that doesn’t catch you off guard, focusing instead on a smooth and linear experience.
