Turkish Grand Prix return confirmed for 2027 at Istanbul Park

The Turkish Grand Prix return is set for 2027 under a five year agreement with Istanbul Park, Formula 1 announced Friday.

The deal, signed by Formula 1 and circuit officials, will keep the race on the calendar through 2031 and restores a long standing venue to the series.

Turkish Grand Prix return: deal and timeline

The agreement was formalized in a ceremony witnessed by Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Formula 1 described the pact as a five year commercial partnership that aims to boost tourism, infrastructure investment, and international exposure for the venue and the region. The contract runs through 2031, the series said.

Why Istanbul Park matters to teams and drivers

Istanbul Park, the circuit near the city of Istanbul, has returned to the F1 calendar several times as a substitute host and each appearance has drawn attention for its technical challenges.

The track is best known for Turn 8, a multi apex, high speed complex that tests car balance, tire grip, and physical endurance. Engineers and drivers regularly single out that corner for the setup compromises it demands.

    Calendar implications for the championship

Formula 1 said the Turkish Grand Prix return comes as the sport manages a fixed annual quota of 24 races, which leaves limited room for new or returning events.

To accommodate changes within that limit, the series is likely to use a rotation model so that some historic European venues appear on the calendar on a non annual basis, Formula 1 added. That approach aims to preserve variety while keeping the total at 24 races, the organization said.

    Broader expansion talks

Beyond Turkey, Formula 1 said it is in talks with potential hosts across Asia and Africa as part of a wider push to broaden the sport’s geographic footprint.

Series leaders told reporters the addition of Istanbul Park reflects a strategy to balance traditional markets with new opportunities, while keeping a controlled total number of events each season.

The Turkish Grand Prix return marks more than the comeback of a single race; it signals Formula 1’s continuing reshaping of its global calendar, with Istanbul Park once again a focal point for that evolution.
