Instagram encrypted messages: Meta ends E2EE support

Instagram encrypted messages were quietly disabled on May 8, 2026, when Meta ended support for end to end encryption, leaving users who relied on Secret Conversations responsible for downloading their own backups.

What the end of Instagram encrypted messages means

Meta said it removed support for E2EE, commonly known as end to end encryption, for Instagram Direct Messages on May 8, 2026. Users who enabled Secret Conversations must follow an in app backup notice to save their chat history, the company said in a support page update.

Because E2EE prevents service providers from holding readable copies of those chats, Meta does not retain server side copies of encrypted messages. That technical design means the company cannot restore Secret Conversations once the feature is removed.

Why Meta ended support for Instagram encrypted messages

Meta told reporters the decision was driven by low usage. “Only a very small number of people turned on encrypted DMs,” a Meta spokesperson said, adding that the company is focusing on WhatsApp as its primary privacy platform where conversations are E2EE by default.

The company quietly added the end of the feature to the Instagram support page in March and did not issue a separate press release; the change took effect in May as the page described, Meta said.

    What users should do now

If you previously enabled Secret Conversations, open the Instagram app and look for the in app notification from Meta about downloading message backups. Follow the instructions in the notification to export your encrypted chats, because Meta says it will not be able to help restore them once support ends.

Meta also warned that users running older versions of the Instagram app should update immediately, or the export tool may not work correctly, according to the company support page.

    Are ordinary direct messages affected?

Users who never turned on Secret Conversations should see no change to their daily Instagram Direct Message experience. Regular DMs have long been readable by Instagram servers for platform features and moderation, and this change does not alter that technical model.

The removal of Secret Conversations highlights a broader point about platform privacy promises: when a large social network discontinues a privacy feature quietly rather than through a high profile announcement, it can leave users with little recourse to recover protected data.

For now Meta is pointing users who want persistent end to end encryption to WhatsApp, and it suggests people who need encrypted messaging should rely on platforms where E2EE remains the default, the company said.
