Chopard skull watch mixes straw, eggshell and gold

Chopard skull watch appears in a new L.U.C Full Strike Día de los Muertos Edition 13 that turns a familiar memento mori motif into an exercise in haute watchmaking and handcraft. The watchmaker has spent years exploring the Mexican Día de los Muertos theme, and this 13th edition replaces bright color with a dial built from straw, eggshell, and gold to create a blue Calavera, or skull, that celebrates life as much as it evokes death.

Chopard said the most striking element is the skull dial, the brand’s first use of eggshell marquetry combined with more than 70 deep blue rye straw elements to create a near geometric collage effect. Each straw piece is cut, flattened, and oriented to use the natural fiber’s light reflection, so the blue skull shifts in tone as the wrist moves; Chopard says a single artisan spent about 160 hours on the dial alone.

On closer inspection the white areas of the eyes and teeth are formed from tiny eggshell pieces set against a black lacquer background, the graded arrangement in the eye sockets giving the skull a surprisingly animated expression. Gold moustache details add a touch of wry humor, and the engraved textures on the dial continue onto the bezel, case band, and crown so the decoration reads as a single, unified design rather than a skull pasted onto a conventional watch face.

The 42.5 millimeter 18K rose gold case measures 11.55 millimeters thick, a restrained proportion for a repeater-equipped wristwatch. Chopard integrated a double power reserve display at the two o’clock area, and the mechanical parts near eight o’clock and the hammers near ten o’clock have been incorporated into the skull motif so decoration and mechanics interact rather than exist separately.

Under the dial sits the L.U.C 08.01 L manual-wind movement, which Chopard says is composed of 533 parts and 63 jewels, beats at 4 hertz, and provides about 60 hours of power reserve. The calibre uses Chopard’s patented monobloc sapphire-crystal gong, a single sapphire structure that functions as both the crystal and the repeater gong to conserve acoustic energy and deliver a clearer chime than traditional, separately mounted gongs.

The L.U.C Full Strike won the Aiguille d’Or, the top prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, in 2017, and Chopard said the new Día de los Muertos Edition 13 builds on that existing acoustic platform rather than presenting an entirely new calibre. The blue CVD hammers and repeater parts echo the skull motif so the visual theme and the watch’s sound architecture are coordinated.

Compared with watches that concentrate value through gemstone setting, this one-off piece is notable for turning humble, everyday natural materials into a finely finished object through extreme handcraft. Chopard lists the watch as a single unique piece, model 161947 5007, and international watch media reported a price of about $575,000.

For collectors the Chopard skull watch represents a different path to exclusivity, one that emphasizes artisanal technique and acoustic engineering as much as precious-metal content. It is a reminder that a familiar symbol can be transformed by material and method into an artwork that celebrates life, not only a reminder of death.
