Apple’s MacBook Pro currently features advanced miniLED technology, but recent rumors about a switch to OLED screens have stirred up attention once again. The latest reports suggest that Apple plans to launch its first MacBook Pro equipped with an OLED display by the end of 2026, with panels exclusively supplied by Samsung Display. The new model is expected to utilize Tandem OLED dual-layer stacking technology and may do away with the existing notch design, replacing it with a camera setup featuring a dynamic island style similar to that of the iPhone.
Reports indicate that Samsung Display has recently made significant investments in its 8.6 generation OLED production line, successfully securing exclusive supplier status with Apple. The large glass substrates used in this production line are particularly well-suited for laptops and monitor panels. Coupled with oxide thin-film transistor technology, this setup not only achieves low power consumption and scalability but also helps reduce manufacturing costs.
OLED panels deliver enhanced brightness, deeper blacks, and superior contrast while improving power efficiency to extend battery life. The new model is expected to use the same Tandem OLED technology as the M4 iPad Pro, achieving outstanding brightness performance through the layering of dual OLED panels.
In addition to significant upgrades in display technology, the 2026 MacBook Pro is expected to debut its first major exterior redesign since 2021. Various sources suggest that Apple may ditch the current bangs design in favor of a punch-hole camera configuration, which will not only increase available screen space but also enhance the overall modern aesthetic.
Although the OLED version of the MacBook Pro is confirmed to launch by the end of 2026, details about its processor specifications remain unclear. Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman mentions that Apple might delay the M5 version of the MacBook Pro until early 2026, indicating that the OLED version could be equipped with the M6 chip. This scheduling is quite unusual, and it’s possible that the final plans may undergo some adjustments.
The OLED technology will initially be applied to the high-end MacBook Pro models, before expanding to the MacBook Air series. According to supply chain information, the OLED version of the MacBook Air may not be released until 2028 or later, and it will feature single-layer standard OLED panels rather than the dual-layer stacking technology.
