DuckDuckGo browser blocks YouTube ads by default

DuckDuckGo browser will block YouTube ads by default on iOS, Windows and Mac, the company announced Friday, giving users an option to skip pre roll and mid roll commercials without installing extensions.

DuckDuckGo said the feature is enabled by default after users upgrade to the latest version. According to PCMag and Digital Trends, the browser uses community maintained filter lists similar to those used by uBlock Origin to intercept ads before a video starts and during playback.

DuckDuckGo described the change as an integration of ad blocking into the browser core, rather than relying on third party extensions. The company said this approach should make blocking harder to circumvent and reduce compatibility conflicts between extensions.

PCMag reported that the move will let many mobile users avoid paying for YouTube Premium to reduce ad interruptions. Digital Trends noted YouTube has periodically adjusted its ad detection to limit the viewing experience for accounts that use ad blockers, leaving open the question of how long the blocking will remain effective.

How the DuckDuckGo browser blocks ads

The DuckDuckGo browser applies community filter lists at the browser level to stop requests that load ads on YouTube. DuckDuckGo and third party reports say this covers both pre roll and mid roll placements, which normally interrupt viewing.

The company said integrating the lists into the browser core is intended to make the blocking more reliable across devices. PCMag noted that integrating filters into the browser is different from the usual reliance on extensions, which can conflict with each other and with browser updates.

What this means for users and Google

For users, the primary benefit is fewer ad interruptions on mobile and desktop without a paid YouTube subscription. PCMag said this could make DuckDuckGo browser more appealing to people who prioritize both privacy and an ad light viewing experience.

At the same time, industry observers told Digital Trends that the change is likely to trigger another round of technical countermeasures from Google and YouTube. YouTube has previously taken steps to detect and limit ad blocking, and those measures could evolve in response to this integration.

DuckDuckGo browser is available for free download on Windows, Mac and iOS, the company said. Users can upgrade to the latest release to enable the feature by default.

PCMag and Digital Trends provided the initial reporting on the rollout. DuckDuckGo released details on its blog and in update notes for the new builds.
