Sony RX1R III Camera Launches with 61MP Full-Frame Sensor and Advanced Features

Sony has recently launched the third generation of the RX1R series camera, marking the first update to the line since 2015. The new RX1R III boasts a remarkable 61MP full-frame sensor, a significant upgrade from the previous generation's 42.4MP. It is equipped with the latest Bionz XR and AI image processors, delivering more precise human tracking and eye autofocus capabilities. This camera is set to hit the market soon, with a price tag of around $5,100 (approximately HKD 39,780), which is about $2,000 more than the RX1R II that was released in 2015.

The RX1R III carries on the series' signature features, boasting a fixed Zeiss Sonnar T 35mm F2 lens and a full-frame Exmor R sensor. To maintain its portability, Sony has opted for a magnesium alloy body, but has sacrificed the previous tilting screen for a fixed rear display. This change may affect convenience when shooting at low angles, meaning users will likely need to rely on the 2.36 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder or adjust their shooting posture for composition.

Addressing the limitations of fixed lenses, the RX1R III introduces the Stage Cutting Photography feature, allowing photographers to seamlessly switch between focal lengths of 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm. Additionally, this camera supports macro mode, enabling clear focus on subjects at a distance of just 20cm by adjusting the lens ring. With 693 phase-detection autofocus points, it accurately tracks eyes even when the subject's face is partially obscured or not directly facing the lens.

When it comes to video shooting, the RX1R III supports 4K recording at 30fps and can achieve 120fps for 1080p slow-motion filming, marking a significant upgrade from its predecessor which only supported 1080p. The built-in Sony S-Cinetone color profile delivers a more cinematic look, along with 12 customizable creative styles that are perfect for still photography and video recording. However, the continuous shooting speed is only 5 frames per second, indicating its primary focus as a high-quality portable camera rather than a professional sports photography tool.

The pricing of the RX1R III positions it as a contender among similar fixed-lens cameras like the Fujifilm GFX100RF (approximately HKD 38,220) and the Leica Q3 (approximately HKD 46,760). Despite significant advancements over its predecessor, Sony's own interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras, such as the A7R V, may offer more attractive features and value for money. The market performance of the RX1R III will hinge on consumer demand for ultra-portable full-frame cameras.
