Tesla and Samsung Sign $16.5 Billion Chip Supply Deal for AI Chips and Factory Development

Elon Musk recently revealed that Tesla has signed a chip supply agreement with Samsung worth up to $16.5 billion, marking Samsung's largest single-client contract in history. This agreement will last until 2033.

At the heart of this collaboration, Samsung is set to invest $40 billion in building a factory in Taylor, Texas, dedicated to producing Tesla's next-generation AI6 chips. This facility will receive $4.75 billion in funding from the U.S. Chips and Science Bill along with up to $9 billion in tax incentives. Furthermore, Elon Musk noted that Samsung is currently manufacturing the AI4 chips, while TSMC is tasked with the recently designed AI5 chips, with initial production starting in Taiwan and later moving to Arizona.

For Samsung, this contract holds significant implications, especially as the company’s contract manufacturing business has long been struggling with losses, reporting over $3.63 billion in losses in the first half of this year alone. Analysts highlight that Samsung's Texas facility previously faced There are hardly any customers., and this collaboration with Tesla could become a pivotal turning point for the business. Samsung even delayed the introduction of ASML chip manufacturing equipment due to a lack of major clients, pushing the facility's operational plans back to 2026.

Elon Musk also emphasized that Samsung has agreed to let Tesla assist in enhancing manufacturing efficiency and has committed to personally inspecting the production lines to expedite progress. He mentioned the new plant Conveniently located near my home.. He stated that the contract amount of $16.5 billion is just Minimum Number, and the actual output could be several times higher. The specific details of the contract will remain confidential until 2033 to protect commercial secrets.

The AI6 chip will become a key component of Tesla's future driving hardware suite, supporting the fully autonomous driving system, the Optimus humanoid robot, and high-performance AI training data centers. Since 2019, Tesla has transitioned from the Nvidia Drive platform to its in-house chips, and its AI4 chip features a redundant design, with two duplicate systems arranged on a single circuit board.

The news broke, and Samsung's stock surged over 6.8%, hitting a new high not seen since last September, while supplier Soulbrain's stock skyrocketed by 16%. This agreement highlights a shift in the global chip supply landscape, as the United States aims to lessen its reliance on Taiwan and China, increasing investments in domestic semiconductor production. For consumers, this collaboration promises to accelerate the launch of Tesla vehicles that are smarter and equipped with AI capabilities, featuring enhanced onboard computing and autonomous capabilities.

Analysts predict that equipment installation will commence in the first half of next year, with testing production and Tesla evaluations expected to take place in the second half of 2027. Samsung has already dispatched employees from its semiconductor division to the Taylor plant, as Tesla has requested a production yield of 60% to 70%. Samsung is currently adjusting its plans to meet this target.
