R.U.S.E. on Steam returned May 4, 2026, when developer Eugen Systems relisted the 2010 World War II real time strategy game as a Definitive Edition.

R.U.S.E. on Steam, how the rights moved back to the developer

The relisting ends more than a decade in which Ubisoft had removed the title from digital stores, citing expired licensing for in game military equipment.

In a company announcement, Eugen Systems said, “We developed and published R.U.S.E., but at the time the game rights did not belong to us.” The Steam store page now lists Eugen Systems as both developer and publisher, confirming Ubisoft has relinquished publishing credit.

    What the Definitive Edition includes

Eugen Systems is clear that this is not a remaster but the original game reissued with added support and bundled content.

    • All previously released DLC is included at no additional cost, and prior owners receive the content for free, Eugen Systems said.
    • Official Steam Deck support is included, with the game certified to run on Valve’s handheld by the Steam store listing.
    • Stability optimizations for modern hardware have been applied, though the developer has not published a detailed changelog.
    • Legacy save files and recorded replays cannot be loaded directly into the new build, but Eugen Systems says players can access older versions via Steam’s Compatibility Branch in the game’s properties.

Price, reviews, and player response for R.U.S.E. on Steam

The Definitive Edition is priced at $29.99, Eugen Systems confirmed on the Steam store page.

That price prompted debate among players, because the original release dates to 2010 and some consider $29.99 high for a decade old title. Steam users have answered with strong enthusiasm: the game shows a 98 percent positive rating in user reviews since relisting.

R.U.S.E. is remembered for its IRISZOOM engine, which lets players zoom from close unit level to a table top style overview in a single action. That zoom mechanic set the game apart from many contemporaries, and reviewers say it still feels distinctive today.

Why the relisting matters for classic RTS fans

A title forced off digital storefronts for licensing reasons returning to the developer’s control is uncommon in the games business. Eugen Systems regaining publishing credit means the studio can maintain the game on modern platforms and patch it directly.

For players who missed R.U.S.E. in its original run, the relisting offers a chance to experience a decade old real time strategy game that many say has not lost its design edge. For long time fans, the Definitive Edition aims to preserve the original while making it easier to play on current hardware.

Will you revisit the battlefield, or try R.U.S.E. for the first time now that it is back on Steam?
