Hong Kong U16 vs Manchester United ended in a 2-2 draw and was decided by penalties, with Hong Kong U16 winning 7-6 in a shootout at Mong Kok Stadium, the Hong Kong Jockey Club and the Hong Kong Football Association said. The match drew 4,433 fans to Mong Kok Stadium (a municipal venue in Mong Kok, Kowloon) on Saturday.

The event, co-hosted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA), and Manchester United, featured a pregame appearance by former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov. Manchester United sent its under-16 side to face the Hong Kong U16 representative team in the tournament final.
Hong Kong U16 vs Manchester United, a high-tempo contest
Hong Kong took the lead in the 23rd minute after a left-wing move finished with a precise cross from winger Yu Lap-fung (余立峯), who created the chance that allowed Huang Shun (黃舜) to slot home into an unguarded net. The home side defended stoutly for the rest of the first half and went into the break holding a 1-0 advantage.

Manchester United turned up the pressure after halftime and equalized in the 51st minute when Majid Muhammad finished a low drive from the edge of the box. United then took the lead in the 72nd minute when 12-year-old forward Camron Benjamin met a right-side cross at the far post and converted on a close-range rebound.
Late comeback forces penalties
Hong Kong coach Takuro Hosaka (保坂拓朗) made timely substitutions and the hosts found an equalizer in the 86th minute. Substitute Kei Sing-wai (紀盛淮) fired a long-range shot that Manchester United goalkeeper William Thompson misjudged, allowing the ball to trickle into the net and force a 2-2 scoreline.

The match went straight to a penalty shootout after the 90 minutes ended level. The shootout produced several dramatic moments, including two saved penalties that were ordered to be retaken after video review found the Hong Kong substitute goalkeeper Lo Kin-fung (羅建峰) had left his line early. The referee also issued Lo a yellow card for the infractions, the HKFA match report said.
Penalty drama and a historic result
Despite the retakes and the cautions, Hong Kong U16 maintained composure. The team converted all five of its spot kicks and prevailed 7-6 on penalties, marking a historic victory over Manchester United U16. The HKFA called the result a milestone for local youth development.

The victory follows another local upset earlier in the week when Kitchee SC U18 beat a Manchester United youth side, making this the second time in seven days that a Hong Kong youth team defeated United’s academy, the Hong Kong Jockey Club said. Yu Lap-fung, who won the match award, said the result showed Hong Kong young players could compete with top international academies when they play with belief and fight.

Hong Kong U16 vs Manchester United will be remembered locally as a breakthrough result for the city’s youth game, the HKFA said in a statement. Coach Takuro Hosaka praised his players’ mentality and composure under pressure, and called the win a reward for the squad’s preparation and resilience.
