Apple Siri news licensing to pay per-use for live reporting

Apple Siri news licensing is expected to rely on up to a nine-figure US dollar budget, The Wall Street Journal reported, as Apple holds talks with multiple international news organizations to give a redesigned Siri real-time access to breaking coverage.

The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the discussions, said Apple plans to negotiate long-term licensing contracts rather than buying news archives outright. A person familiar with the talks, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said the deals would feed a new Siri that can cite recent articles when answering user queries.

Under the model described, Apple would adopt a pay-per-use approach, paying publishers each time their reporting is used to generate an answer. The renewed Siri is expected to use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology to connect directly to newsrooms via live API feeds and assemble concise, conversational responses for users.

Zero-click era and what Apple Siri news licensing means for small outlets

Industry analysts warn the plan could deepen the zero-click problem, where users get answers from an AI assistant and no longer visit publishers’ websites. That outcome threatens ad revenue and referral traffic for smaller, independent outlets that lack leverage in early licensing rounds.

Publishers with global scale are likely to command the largest shares of any initial pool of payments, a second person familiar with the negotiations said. Small and niche newsrooms may be left to pursue specialist, subscription, or sponsored formats to remain financially viable when Apple Siri news licensing reduces direct web referrals.

Apple has not publicly commented on the negotiations. A company spokesperson declined to comment to The Wall Street Journal. The reported shift toward pay-per-use and RAG infrastructure would treat news as measurable infrastructure, with publishers paid for each citation used by the assistant.

If implemented, Apple Siri news licensing could change how readers discover reporting, and how newsrooms fund their reporting, analysts at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism said. They urged publishers to press for transparent measurement of citation counts and fair revenue shares if licensing moves forward.

For users, the practical change would be faster, spoken answers that cite recent sources, rather than a list of search links. For newsrooms, it is a prompt to negotiate both favorable API terms and alternative revenue streams before the new Siri rolls out later this year.
