Nike Moon Shoe returns in a new Malachite colorway, with Nike listing the Moon Shoe OG at a retail price of $105 USD. The release pairs a deep Malachite green upper with Soft Pearl highlights and a Gum Light Brown outsole.
Nike Moon Shoe OG: design and color
The new Nike Moon Shoe balances a muted palette and readable detail: Malachite green dominates the upper, Soft Pearl provides subtle accents, and the Gum Light Brown outsole adds natural warmth to the silhouette. The combination aims for a timeless look rather than a strictly retro pastiche, keeping the model approachable for both collectors and runners.
Nike Moon Shoe OG: the waffle sole story
Nike attributes the Moon Shoe's signature waffle sole to co-founder Bill Bowerman. According to Nike, Bowerman experimented in 1971 by pouring rubber into a waffle iron at home, producing the grid-patterned tread that defined early running shoes.
The first Moon Shoe, introduced in 1972, was the brand's earliest application of that sole. Nike says the nickname Moon Shoe comes from the crater-like impressions the grid made on soft surfaces during track tests, an image that has stuck with the model for more than five decades.
Price, availability, and who it suits
Nike lists the Moon Shoe OG at $105 USD, making this OG reissue an accessible entry point for people discovering the model for the first time as well as long-time collectors. The brand says the current OG reproductions use modern materials and construction while preserving the waffle texture and overall contour.
As an antecedent to later Nike icons such as the Air Max and the Dunk, the Moon Shoe occupies a clear place in the company’s origin story, and this Malachite colorway is positioned to keep that history visible in today’s sneaker market, Nike said.
