Counterpoint Research said the standard iPhone 17 emerged as the world s most popular smartphone in Q1 2026, with the standard model capturing 6% purchase share, overtaking the iPhone 17 Pro Max as the single most bought device.
The report said Apple s line-up continued to dominate the leaderboard, with Apple models holding three of the top five positions in global smartphone sales for the quarter.
China demand and corporate results
Counterpoint Research reported that sales in China surged about 20% year over year in the quarter, a jump that helped Apple post strong earnings.
Apple reported quarterly revenue of $85.3 billion, a figure the company attributed to robust iPhone demand and ongoing services growth.
Why the standard iPhone 17 is winning
Analysts said the shift reflects a broader trend: consumers are increasingly sensitive to the upgrade value of standard hardware, and many are no longer willing to pay large premiums for top-tier extras.
The iPhone 17 standard now includes ProMotion smooth-display technology and offers the same screen size as the Pro Max, with the main hardware difference limited to the telephoto lens. That combination made the model attractive to everyday users seeking a balance of price and performance.
Rivals hold ground in budget segments
Other manufacturers found opportunities in budget and midrange segments, Counterpoint Research said, naming Samsung models Galaxy A07 5G and Galaxy A17 5G as focal points for price-conscious buyers.
Xiaomi also placed a model in the top 10, with the Redmi A5 earning a spot through a mix of aggressive pricing and practical specifications, the report said.

Counterpoint Research concluded that iPhone 17 sales signal a market rhythm in which new premium models released in September capture early interest, then the standard models mount a broader push the following spring, widening their consumer reach.
