Redmi 17 price and key differences
The main choice between the models is not color, it is network and memory configuration. Xiaomi launched two versions in Hong Kong, the Redmi 17 and the Redmi 17 5G. The Redmi 17 is a 4G model starting at about $165 (originally HK$1,299). The Redmi 17 5G starts at about $191 (originally HK$1,499).
The two phones share a 7,500mAh battery, a 6.9 inch 120Hz LCD screen, and a 50 megapixel AI dual camera system. But the processors differ: the Redmi 17 uses the MediaTek Helio G91-Ultra for 4G, while the Redmi 17 5G uses the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 Mobile Platform with 5G support.
On pricing, Xiaomi positions the 5G model a little higher. The 5G 4GB+128GB configuration costs HK$200 more than the 4G 4GB+128GB model, about $25 (originally HK$200). Upgrading from the 4G 4GB+256GB to the 5G 6GB+256GB adds HK$400, about $51 (originally HK$400). Those differences mainly reflect payment for 5G connectivity and, in the larger jump, an extra 2GB of physical RAM.
Shared strengths: battery and screen
Both models include 7,500mAh typical capacity batteries and 45 watt wired charging. Xiaomi lists video playback numbers that are not directly identical across the two models. The Redmi 17 is rated up to 28 hours of video playback in the company test. The Redmi 17 5G is rated up to 28 hours playing local 1080p video.
The 6.9 inch LCD panels support AdaptiveSync at up to 120Hz, switching among 60Hz, 90Hz and 120Hz to balance smoothness and power. The panels have a 1,600 by 720 resolution. The 120Hz mode improves motion smoothness, but it does not bring near-view text and photo detail up to midrange full high definition levels.
Xiaomi also advertises TÜV Rheinland triple eye comfort certification and DC dimming. Those features matter for long reading sessions, but perceived comfort still depends on brightness settings, ambient light, and viewing distance.
What the 5G version buys you
The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 platform in the Redmi 17 5G is the clearest technical separation from the Helio G91-Ultra in the 4G model. In many daily scenarios the speed difference will not be dramatic. But 5G connectivity, UFS 2.2 storage on the 5G model, and the availability of a 6GB+256GB option make the 5G version better suited to users who frequently switch among maps, banking apps, camera use, short video platforms, and messaging apps.
Four gigabytes of RAM remains usable for messaging, browsing, short video, social apps, and basic photography. But with less background retention, apps are more likely to reload when switching. Xiaomi’s storage based memory expansion borrows from storage and is not a substitute for extra physical RAM. If you plan to keep a phone two or three years, the Redmi 17 5G 6GB+256GB at about $242 (originally HK$1,899) offers more room for multitasking.
Daily features both models keep
Both phones include the 50 megapixel AI dual camera, dual stereo speakers, a maximum 300 percent volume boost mode, and IP64 dust and splash protection. Those specifications position the phones for daily capture, document shots, calls, and short video playback rather than flagship class night photography or studio quality audio.
Both phones have a Dynamic RGB Light for incoming calls, app notifications, charging, game alerts, and camera use. It is a convenience and recognition tool, not a core performance differentiator.
IP64 and wet touch support are useful in rain, cooking, or after exercise. IP64 dust and splash protection does not mean the phone is safe for full immersion in water. Wet touch support should not be taken as permission for operation under water or in all liquids.
Budget should determine the version
The Redmi 17 lineup is straightforward. The Redmi 17 4G 4GB+128GB entry model at about $165 (originally HK$1,299) trades 5G and extra RAM for the lowest price. The Redmi 17 5G 4GB+128GB at about $191 (originally HK$1,499) adds 5G while keeping 4GB of RAM. For heavier long term multitasking, the 6GB+256GB 5G option at about $242 (originally HK$1,899) is the more future proof pick.
If all you care about is one day of use between charges, both phones meet that need because of the large battery and efficiency tuning. If mobile data speed and app switching matter more, choose 5G and consider extra physical RAM rather than relying on storage based memory expansion.
