Sony Xperia 1 VIII Review: Big-Sensor Telephoto, Headphone Jack

Sony Xperia 1 VIII pairs a much larger telephoto sensor with a 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD expansion, starting at approximately $1,545 (originally 12,099 HKD / reference rate 1 HKD = 0.1277 USD), Sony said.

For users tired of low-light telephoto shots that look like watercolor paintings, and who do not want to choose between a headphone jack and flagship specs, Sony positions the Xperia 1 VIII as an uncompromising option.

Here are the headline numbers to know about the Xperia 1 VIII, as supplied by Sony.

    • Storage and memory: three configurations — 12GB RAM with 256GB, 12GB with 512GB, and a Sony Store exclusive 16GB with 1TB. The model starts at approximately $1,545 (originally 12,099 HKD / reference rate 1 HKD = 0.1277 USD).
    • Platform and battery: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, up to 16GB memory support, and a 5,000mAh battery aimed at two day mixed use, Sony said.
    • Cameras: three 48MP sensors. The main camera uses a 1/1.35-inch sensor with a 24mm equivalent, the ultrawide is a 48MP 1/1.56-inch sensor at 16mm f/2.0, and the telephoto is a 48MP 1/1.56-inch sensor at 70mm f/2.8 that Sony says can be extended by high resolution cropping to an effective 140mm field of view.
    • Legacy features: a 3.5mm headphone jack, dual physical shutter buttons, and a microSD slot supporting up to 2TB cards. With the 1TB internal option, Sony says total storage can reach about 3TB, a rare combination for 2026 flagships.

Sony Xperia 1 VIII price and generational rise

The Xperia 1 VIII continues a steady premium shift in Sony’s flagship line. Sony said the entry price is about $1,545 (originally 12,099 HKD / reference rate 1 HKD = 0.1277 USD), while top configurations approach approximately $1,916 (originally about 15,000 HKD / reference rate 1 HKD = 0.1277 USD).

That pricing aligns the Xperia 1 VIII with the iPhone 16 Pro Max and Galaxy S26 Ultra in 2026, but Sony’s market share and retail visibility are smaller. Sony appears to be selling a distinct proposition: keep features most other brands have removed, and aim them at a narrower group of users who know what they need.

Longer telephoto, roughly four times the light gathering

Sony said the Xperia 1 VIII’s telephoto uses a 48MP 1/1.56-inch sensor whose active area is nearly four times that of the previous generation’s telephoto unit. The native focal length is a 70mm equivalent, and Sony says high pixel cropping lets the camera reach about 140mm equivalent without resorting to extreme digital zoom.

A larger sensor area lets the camera use lower ISO or faster shutter speeds in the same scene, Sony said. That should reduce noise and help freeze motion in low light while preserving detail, particularly when the phone applies Sony’s RAW multi frame processing on the telephoto path.

Photographers who prefer telephoto portraits will find 70mm familiar. Combined with the 1/1.56-inch sensor, Sony says the phone should produce cleaner half body and seated portraits with more subject separation than the prior model. Sony also notes telephoto autofocus supports close focus shots for subjects like flowers, watches, and models, producing a compressed background similar to medium telephoto macro optics.

    How flagship telephoto philosophies differ

Unlike some competitors that advertise five times or higher optical zoom, Sony concentrates resources on a practical medium long telephoto sweet spot. The Xperia 1 VIII emphasizes optical quality at 70mm, extending to about 140mm through high resolution cropping rather than aggressive long range telescoping digital zoom.

That tradeoff suits stage and concert photography, and architectural detail, where stable image quality at 70mm matters more than extreme reach. If you mostly want to zoom far to read distant signs on vacation, ultra long zoom phones may be more appealing; if you want images that hold up to enlargement and printing, Sony’s large sensor telephoto is the stronger choice.

    AI Camera Assistant

Sony introduced an AI Camera Assistant to bridge the gap between professional controls and automatic convenience. Sony said the assistant detects the scene and overlays composition, focus point, and suggested focal length guidance on the viewfinder, while offering a one tap switch back to the full manual interface familiar to Alpha camera users.

For casual users, Sony said the assistant lets you hand the phone to the AI for exposure and composition, then gradually explore manual controls. For Alpha owners, Sony positions the Xperia 1 VIII as a pocketable backup that uses familiar control logic.

Materials, ergonomics, and the three camera layout

Sony calls the finish ORE, or original stone, a muted mineral texture applied to both the rear and the frame. The camera module moves from a horizontal bar to a near square three lens array concentrated on the upper half of the back, which Sony said helps accommodate the larger telephoto stack and makes it easier for cases to fully enclose the module.

Early hands on reports noted a smoother edge transition and a finer matte grind on the rear that increases grip without feeling abrasive. The 6.5-inch tall aspect ratio helps single handed vertical use. Sony and reviewers say the textured rear provides more tactile security than a glossy glass back when the phone is used as a camera first.

    3.5mm headphone jack and microSD

In 2026 it is uncommon for a flagship to offer both a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD slot. Sony kept both. The microSD slot supports up to 2TB cards, and with a 1TB internal option Sony says total storage can reach roughly 3TB.

Sony framed this design for three user types. First, audiophiles who still prefer wired headphones and want Hi Res audio without Bluetooth latency or charging hassles. Second, creators and event shooters who need extended on device 4K recording and prefer writing footage to removable cards. Third, users who demand physical control over data recovery in case of device failure.

By contrast, Apple and Samsung flagships have long dropped the headphone jack and microSD in favor of wireless audio and cloud storage. For most buyers that tradeoff simplifies daily use; for users in the three groups above, Sony says the Xperia 1 VIII is one of the few phones that still satisfies those needs together.

    Performance and battery life

The Xperia 1 VIII uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 built on a 3 nanometer process, Sony said. Sony and early reviewers reported roughly 20 percent CPU gains and about 23 percent GPU uplift over the prior generation Snapdragon 8 Elite, with up to 20 percent power savings at similar performance levels.

Battery capacity remains 5,000mAh, with about 30W wired and 15W wireless charging. Sony said tempered charging profiles and battery protection settings aim to preserve battery health and deliver two day mixed use endurance. Sony also committed to four major Android version upgrades and six years of security patches, a selling point for buyers who plan to use a phone for three to four years.

Who should consider the Sony Xperia 1 VIII

If you want a simple phone that produces pleasing HDR photos and one tap social filters, and you no longer care about wired headphones or removable storage, mainstream iPhone or Galaxy flagships will probably be easier and better value. Sony’s price and feature set may be more than you need.

But the Xperia 1 VIII is worth a look if you match several of these criteria:

    • You frequently use medium telephoto for portraits, stages, or architectural detail and need telephoto quality to hold up to enlargement or printing.
    • You are a photographer who wants phone controls and image character closer to an interchangeable lens camera.
    • You insist on wired headphones, or you record and edit large volumes of video and rely on removable storage and card based workflows for backup and transfer.

The key question for prospective buyers is whether the phone’s rare combination of a large sensor telephoto, a 3.5mm jack, and expandable storage justifies paying a premium. If those features matter to you, the Sony Xperia 1 VIII aims to be the flagship that refuses the compromises other manufacturers made.
