Zenith A384 Tropical returns the original 1969 A384 design, pairing a warm “tropical” panda dial with the El Primero 400 movement, Zenith said.
For many watch collectors, 1969 is remembered not only for cultural landmarks, but also for Zenith introducing the El Primero, the first automatic integrated high frequency chronograph movement. Zenith said the El Primero changed sports chronograph engineering and established the brand in high frequency timing.
Among the three original models fitted with El Primero in 1969, the A384 stood out for its barrel shaped case and bold panda dial. The new CHRONOMASTER Revival A384 Tropical aims to bring that late 1960s design spirit back, while using modern materials where appropriate.
The new watch’s signature is its “tropical” dial treatment. In vintage collecting, a tropical dial is not a deliberate color choice, but the result of long term sun exposure and natural oxidation that turns an originally dark dial into a warm brown. Zenith says the Revival does not copy a single vintage example, but recreates the aged palette and texture.

The dial pairs a white lacquer main surface with brown chronograph subdials, a layout collectors sometimes call a “chocolate panda.” Compared with a stark black and white panda, this tonal approach softens the look while preserving the original sport watch energy. The tachymeter ring is finished in a matching brown, and the hands and markers use an “old radium” SuperLumiNova to evoke vintage tool watch patina without compromising modern legibility.
Details remain faithful to the 1969 cues, including a red central chronograph seconds hand, a 4:30 date window, and a period style typeface. On the 12 hour subdial, a slightly extended numeral reaches toward the inner ring, a small imperfection that adds to the vintage character.

Zenith A384 Tropical is built from the 1969 blueprints, the company said, keeping the 37 mm case proportions and original case details. The Revival reproduces the radial brushing on the bezel, polished beveled edges, and pump style chronograph pushers so the watch wears with the same profile as the original A384.
The one practical update is modern sapphire crystal and a transparent case back. Through the back you can see the El Primero 400 movement. Zenith says the El Primero 400 retains the core layout of the original 3019 PHC, including a column wheel, horizontal clutch, and a five hertz high frequency, which is 36,000 vibrations per hour and enables timing to one tenth of a second. The movement offers about 50 hours of power reserve.

One immediately wearable detail is the ladder style bracelet. The original Gay Freres ladder link design is known for hollow stepped links that feel lighter and more breathable than they look. The Revival preserves the vintage silhouette while improving comfort for daily wear.
In practice, the appeal of the CHRONOMASTER Revival A384 Tropical is twofold: it is a faithful recreation of a specific 1969 model, and it captures the experimental, slightly imperfect charm of early mechanical chronographs. For collectors and vintage watch fans, Zenith A384 Tropical reconnects a modern wearer with the material history of the original.
