WhatsApp Launches Message Summaries with Meta AI for Secure Unread Message Overview

WhatsApp recently launched an innovative feature Message Summaries, which uses Meta AI to quickly summarize unread messages for users, aiming to enhance the overall user experience. This feature has been rolled out in the United States with an English version, and it is expected to expand to other countries and languages in the coming months, bringing convenience to users worldwide.

WhatsApp emphasizes that this service utilizes Private Processing technology to ensure that users’ private data is fully protected. Neither Meta nor WhatsApp can view the content of users’ messages or their summaries.

Through the Message Summaries feature, users can click to expand unread messages, and WhatsApp will utilize Meta AI to generate bullet point summaries instead of displaying the message content directly. WhatsApp also notes that this feature is particularly suitable for busy moments between meetings, during flights without Wi-Fi, or when trying to catch up on a flood of chat messages.

This feature is based on the Private Processing technology that WhatsApp launched in April, aiming to enable AI functionalities in a secure manner. This technology processes AI requests within a secure environment created by a confidential virtual machine (CVM) in the cloud, ensuring a safe connection between user devices and the trusted execution environment (TEE).

WhatsApp has emphasized that this technology prevents any third parties, including Meta and WhatsApp, from viewing the actual content of messages to generate summaries. Additionally, other members in group chats will not know if a user has utilized the summary feature, ensuring privacy protection is always maintained.

It is worth noting that the Message Summaries function is set to off by default and is completely optional, allowing users to freely choose whether to enable it. WhatsApp also offers the Advanced Chat Privacy option, enabling users to decide which chat content can be shared for AI operations. The company emphasizes that We believe that users should always have control over their own experience..

Over the past year, Meta has continuously added various AI features to WhatsApp, including the ability for users to ask questions to Meta AI in chats and the capability to generate images instantly. However, some users have expressed dissatisfaction with the unclosable Meta AI button in the bottom right corner of the app. Additionally, the introduction of ads within the application has sparked backlash, contradicting the earlier promises made by the founder not to introduce advertisements.
