Apple Siri settlement: $250M to resolve delay suit

The Apple Siri settlement resolves a U.S. class action with $250 million, after plaintiffs said Apple marketed an AI powered “personalized Siri” feature that never arrived as promised.

Apple Siri settlement, what the deal covers

The lawsuit traces to 2024, when Apple heavily promoted Apple Intelligence, a suite of on device and cloud features that included a next generation voice assistant Apple described as able to understand context, act across apps, and draw on a user’s personal data to deliver personalized responses.

The company used the personalized Siri idea as a selling point for the iPhone 16 series and for the iPhone 15 Pro in U.S. marketing materials and product presentations, the class action complaint says.

    When Apple acknowledged the delay

Nearly two years later, the feature had not been released. In March 2025 Apple publicly confirmed delays, and the company removed related advertising, according to court filings in the case.

The complaint covers consumers who bought the affected iPhone models in the United States during a defined period, and it argued buyers were misled by the promotional claims.

Legal terms and next steps for payments

Under the proposed Apple Siri settlement, the payment is conditional on final approval by a federal judge. The agreement, as reported in court papers, does not include any admission of wrongdoing by Apple, a common term in corporate settlements that prevents the payment from serving as an admission in other suits.

How the $250 million will be distributed to individual class members will depend on the final settlement terms and the number of valid claims submitted, the court filings show.

A lawyer for the plaintiffs, identified in court documents as counsel for the class, said the settlement provides a practical route to compensate consumers while the underlying product work continues.

Apple’s technical pivot and Gemini reports

Separately, reports from Engadget and statements from a person familiar with Apple’s plans indicate the company has adjusted the technical direction for the new Siri. The work slated for release with iOS 27 is expected to incorporate Google’s Gemini model as part of the assistant’s backend, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

If accurate, the move would mark a notable shift for Apple, a company known for building features within its closed ecosystem, and it suggests Apple sees benefit in partnering for large language model capabilities rather than relying solely on its in house models.

Impact for users and precedent for marketing claims

For consumers, the promotional expectations that accompanied iPhone 16 series and iPhone 15 Pro purchases remain only partially realized. The features that shipped under Apple Intelligence differ from the personalized Siri vision described in marketing, the complaint says.

The Apple Siri settlement does not deliver the feature itself, but it does create a legal precedent: promoting features that are not yet available can carry financial and legal consequences when buyers allege they were misled.

There is no firm timetable for when the revised Siri will reach users. Apple’s iOS 27 release schedule and the timeline for Gemini integration will determine how long buyers and potential customers must wait, the person familiar with the matter said.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment on the settlement beyond earlier court filings. In March 2025 Apple acknowledged delays and removed promotional materials, court papers show.
